5 Reasons to Send Your Child to Camp – A Pediatrician/Mom/Camp Doctor's Perspective

Dr. Ashley Loboda

As a pediatrician, I often encourage parents to consider camp as an enriching experience for their child’s overall development. I loved summer camp as a child and now have watched my own children’s growth through their summer camp experiences.  As a volunteer Camp Doctor, I also have the unique opportunity to support a diverse group of children through camp.  Whether it’s a day camp or an overnight program, camp offers unique developmental, social, and health benefits that go beyond just having fun.

Here are 5 compelling reasons why camp is a great choice for kids:

1. Camp Encourages Physical Activity (and time away from screens)

Many kids today spend too much time indoors on screens, leading to sedentary habits. Summer camps encourage outdoor play, sports, swimming, hiking, and other physical activities that help improve fitness, coordination, and overall health.

2. Camp Fosters Independence and Teaches Responsibility and Self-Care

Being away from home in a structured but less formal setting helps children become more self-reliant. They make decisions, take care of their belongings, and follow a schedule—essential life skills that foster independence.

3. Camp Boosts Social Skills and Confidence

At camp, kids interact with peers outside their usual school and home environment. They learn teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills, which help build self-confidence and independence. For shy or introverted children, camp can be a great way to develop friendships in a relaxed, fun setting.

4. Camp Promotes Resilience and Problem-Solving

Camp exposes kids to new situations where they must adapt, solve problems, and overcome challenges. Whether it’s learning how to paddle a canoe, build a fire, or navigate a ropes course, they develop perseverance and confidence.

5. Camp Creates Lasting Memories

Above all, summer camp is a place where kids create happy memories. The friendships, laughter, and personal achievements they experience can have a lasting positive impact on their self-esteem and emotional development.

Camp is more than just a fun getaway—it’s a place where kids grow, explore, and build essential life skills. Whether your child is shy, adventurous, artistic, or sporty, there’s a camp out there that will help them thrive.

If you’re considering camp for your child, look for one that matches their interests and comfort level. It might just be the best summer decision you ever make!
